Electrical Engineer- London

BioOrbit is pioneering space-based drug manufacturing. We use microgravity to grow high-quality protein crystals, enabling easier, at-home injectable therapies. As part of our recent success we are looking to grow our team.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer with specialized expertise in circuit design and PCB assembly to develop mission-critical electronics for groundbreaking in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing systems. This role combines advanced electrical design capabilities with hands-on assembly expertise to create robust, space-qualified electronic systems that must operate reliably in the harsh space environment while controlling precision pharmaceutical processes. You will be responsible for designing complex mixed-signal circuits, managing end-to-end PCB development from schematic capture through assembly, and ensuring electromagnetic compatibility for sensitive manufacturing equipment operating in microgravity. This position offers the unique opportunity to pioneer electronic systems that enable pharmaceutical production in space, working with cutting-edge technology that pushes the boundaries of both space electronics and precision manufacturing control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop advanced PCB layouts for space-qualified pharmaceutical manufacturing systems, including high-density routing, multi-layer stackup optimization, and thermal management for harsh space environments.
  • Lead comprehensive circuit design initiatives, including analog/digital mixed-signal circuits, power management systems, sensor interfaces, and control electronics for precision pharmaceutical processes.
  • Manage component selection and qualification programs, conducting detailed analysis of space-rated components, performing radiation tolerance assessments, and establishing qualified parts lists for mission-critical applications.
  • Oversee end-to-end PCB assembly operations, including supplier management, assembly process optimization, quality control inspections, and acceptance testing of flight hardware.
  • Execute comprehensive hardware debugging and testing, including functional verification, environmental testing, and failure analysis using advanced test equipment and diagnostic techniques.
  • Ensure signal integrity and EMC compliance, conducting detailed analyses, implementing mitigation strategies, and validating electromagnetic compatibility for sensitive pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, assembly procedures, test protocols, qualification reports, and configuration management records.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration through design reviews, technical problem-solving sessions, and integration support with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams.

Technical Skills + Core Competencies

  • Expert-level proficiency in PCB design software (Altium Designer preferred), including advanced routing techniques, 3D modeling, and design rule checking for space applications.
  • Advanced circuit simulation capabilities using tools such as SPICE, LTspice, and MATLAB/Simulink for analog and digital circuit optimization and verification.
  • Deep expertise in electrical circuit design principles, including power electronics, mixed-signal design, high-speed digital circuits, and precision analog systems for space environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of space-qualified component selection, including radiation effects analysis, derating guidelines, and reliability assessment for long-duration missions.
  • Proven experience with PCB assembly processes, including surface-mount technology (SMT), through-hole assembly, conformal coating, and space-grade soldering techniques.
  • Advanced skills in electrical testing and validation, including automated test equipment (ATE), oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and environmental test chamber operations.
  • Strong background in signal integrity analysis, including transmission line theory, crosstalk mitigation, and power distribution network design for high-speed systems.
  • Working knowledge of ECSS standards for space electrical design (ECSS-E-ST-20C), EMC compliance (ECSS-E-ST-20-07C), and parts management processes.
  • Experience with pharmaceutical manufacturing electronics, including cleanroom-compatible designs, process control interfaces, and precision measurement systems preferred.
  • Expertise in electromagnetic compatibility testing and mitigation, including conducted and radiated emissions compliance for space and pharmaceutical applications.
  • Strong project management abilities with experience leading hardware development projects from concept through flight qualification.
  • Excellent technical communication skills with ability to present complex electrical designs to multidisciplinary engineering teams and stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in electrical design, PCB development, or related technical role.
  • Experience with PCB design, circuit development, and electrical assembly projects.
  • Preference for candidates with space systems or satellite electronics experience.
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards (ECSS-E-ST-20C, ECSS-E-ST-20-07C) preferred.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team that is at the forefront of innovation and pushing the boundaries of in space manufacturing.
