Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced protein crystallisation scientist to help prove BioOrbit’s core scientific propositions and develop novel crystal products. You will design and execute experiments that test whether selected proteins can be crystallised into forms that create measurable pharmaceutical advantages, both with our reactor on Earth and in space.
Key Responsibilities
- Run and optimise protein crystallisation screens to identify robust crystallisation conditions. This requires analysing complex experimental datasets to generate insight and guide iterative development.
- Collaborate with external partners (CROs, academic groups) for specialised analyses.
- Design and execute experiments that investigate BioOrbit’s core value proposition hypotheses for internal and external crystal products, e.g. scaling to high-concentration formulations and analysing physicochemical parameters such as viscosity.
- Characterising particle systems, including particle size distribution, crystal morphology, polymorphism, purity, aggregation, and stability.
- Translate molecular insights into parameters and constraints for reactor and process design.
- Work closely with bioprocess engineers to align crystallisation science and process implementation.
- Contribute to documentation, data integrity, and scientific communication internally and externally.
- Mentor junior scientists as the team grows.
Requirements
- PhD (or equivalent experience) in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Formulation Science, Nanomedicine, Bioengineering or a related field.
- Strong, hands-on experience specifically in protein crystallisation (e.g. monoclonal antibodies, enzymes, or other biologics), including screening and optimisation.
- Hands-on expertise with analytical techniques relevant to protein characterisation.
- Proven ability to design experiments, interpret complex datasets, and drive scientific decision-making.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex scientific concepts to multidisciplinary teams.
Nice to Have
- Experience with protein purification or formulation development.
- Exposure to bioprocessing equipment and process engineers for process scale-up.
- Experience working in regulated settings.
- Interest in microgravity research or autonomous systems.
- Ability to travel occasionally to visit collaborators.
Working Arrangements
You will be based at our laboratory in Victoria House (near Holborn station, London). This is an on-site role, with attendance in the office/laboratory five days a week. Remote working may be available on an occasional basis, subject to your manager's approval.
