About the Role
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer with experience in HV/MV design to be responsible for the electrical systems that connect our high-performance data centers to the grid and its distribution. This role requires both technical depth in substation and LV distribution design, and the ability to provide strategic input during power purchase agreement (PPA) negotiations.
You will take ownership of the end-to-end design process for Electrical infrastructure: from evaluating interconnection points and transformer sizing, to reviewing substation layouts, protection schemes, and compliance with regional codes. In addition to design work, you will represent FluidStack in discussions with utilities, consultants, and equipment suppliers to ensure that our facilities meet the most demanding standards of reliability and efficiency.
A core responsibility of this role is to act as the technical counterpart in PPA negotiations, translating commercial terms into engineering requirements. You will review proposed agreements for feasibility, identify operational risks, and provide recommendations on capacity, redundancy, power factor, and curtailment obligations.
This position is both analytical and hands-on. You will participate in design reviews, create technical documentation for interconnection applications, and support commissioning of HV/MV infrastructure at new sites. Success in this role means balancing long-term system resilience with near-term project delivery, ensuring our facilities are equipped to support mission-critical workloads without compromise.
Key responsibilities:
Lead design, review, and approval of High Voltage (HV) and Medium Voltage (MV) systems, including substations, feeders, step-down transformers, and utility interconnects.
Manage grid interconnection processes, including preparation of technical documentation for utilities, ISO/RTOs, and regulatory bodies.
Support Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) negotiations by providing technical input on interconnection capacity, reliability, and redundancy requirements.
Troubleshoot HV/MV distribution issues, conduct Root Cause Analyses (RCA), and develop Corrective Action (CA) plans.
Act as resident engineer during substation and MV switchgear construction projects. Support construction, commissioning, and turnover.
Own upgrade strategies for existing facilities: design solutions to add capacity, improve reliability, and increase efficiency.
Perform engineering audits at Fluidstack data centers, focusing on HV/MV infrastructure and substation performance.
Interface with utilities, EPC partners, consultants, and internal teams to maintain grid reliability.
Work on concurrent HV/MV and substation projects across multiple regions.
Focus/What we Value:
We value experience and a growth mindset. You should be adaptable and inclined to get into the field to see things firsthand, excited about a mix of office, field, and utility-facing work.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent HV/MV experience.
Strong engineering judgment and ability to make recommendations despite uncertainty.
Experience solving complex power distribution problems with engineered solutions.
Experience managing HV/MV engineering projects, consultants, and contractors.
Ability to build trust and strong relationships with utilities, EPC partners, and stakeholders.
Adaptability and willingness to spend significant time in the field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience designing or overseeing utility-scale substations (13.8 kV – 230 kV), including relaying, protection, and SCADA integration.
Familiarity with grid interconnection studies (load flow, short-circuit, stability).
Direct experience supporting PPA negotiations.
Knowledge of IEEE, IEC, NEC, NESC, and relevant regional HV/MV standards.
Experience with substation construction drawings, SLDs, protection & control schematics, and submittals.
Exposure to mission critical facilities with redundant HV/MV distribution topologies.
Familiarity with transformers, UPS, diesel generators, static transfer switches, MV/LV switchgear, and controls (EPMS, SCADA, BMS).
