About Medefer

We work alongside the NHS to transform the way that healthcare is delivered, by enabling healthcare systems to provide patients with the best healthcare experience – timely, efficient & effective. Our vision is to completely reframe the way that healthcare is delivered, giving patients the right to choose who will provide their care at the point of a GP referral to a specialist.

There really isn’t a much better purpose, we can and do make a difference for people every single day. People who are sick, worried, or in pain desperately want to have a doctor review their symptoms and get them on the path to health again, or even just put their mind at rest. Medefer makes that happen. WE make that happen. We’re unique in what we do, we’re included in the NHS Increasing Capacity Framework, and we’re CQC regulated.

We are a ground-breaking healthcare company founded by Consultants and GPs working in the NHS. Our culture is driven by a deeply held commitment to the NHS and delivering transformational change to the patient experience. We are a passionate, dedicated, and patient-focussed team striving to make healthcare fit for the 21st century. Our technology facilitates a unique approach in delivering a national service to patients, with world class leading safety, from referral, to treatment, to discharge.

Our Dermatology Service

We are seeking expressions of interest from Medical Photographers in the Staffordshire area to join our newly launched service.

The Contractor role of Medical Photographer will be responsible for the recording, provision and reviewing of high-quality clinical images of patients’ skin conditions using specialised photography techniques and equipment. You should have extensive knowledge of dermoscopy and the use of polarised and non-polarised light to visualise features of the skin that are not visible to the naked eye.

Medical Photographers enable our Dermatologists to provide quicker advice on diagnosis and management than waiting to be seen face to face. You will work closely with our Dermatologists to ensure precise documentation of patient cases and treatment outcomes.

This role is on a Contractor arrangement either on an individual self-employed basis or working via your own personal services company, enabling you to work privately to supplement NHS and/or private income and at the same time, be part of a team working to support transformation in the NHS.

The role offers the opportunity to work one day a week at a GP surgery in Staffordshire (currently in Uttoxeter, with additional locations to be added as the service expands), alongside flexible remote work options.

Key responsibilities:

  • Photography: Capture high-resolution images of skin conditions, lesions, and treatments using specialised equipment and techniques.
  • Image Processing: Edit and enhance images for clarity and detail, ensuring they meet medical standards and requirements.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of all photographic documentation and organise files for easy access.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with dermatologists, nurses, and other medical professionals to understand specific imaging needs and protocols.
  • Patient Interaction: Communicate with patients to explain the photographic process and ensure their comfort during imaging.
  • Research Support: Assist in research projects by providing photographic documentation for studies, presentations, and publications.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that all photography equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and updated as necessary.
  • Audits: Conduct regular quality check to ensure the accuracy and consistency of images.

Experience, Skills & Competencies

  • Education: Degree in photography, medical imaging, illustration, or a related field. Certification in medical photography is preferred and you must also be AHCS registered.
  • Experience: Proven experience in medical or scientific photography is essential, with Dermatology and dermoscopy experience being an advantage.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in digital photography, image editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop), and knowledge of dermatological imaging techniques.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong eye for detail and ability to capture accurate representations of skin conditions.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with patients and medical staff.
  • Ethical Standards: Understanding of patient confidentiality and ethical considerations in medical photography.

Medefer fully complies with the Equality Act 2010. We are an equal opportunities employer, value diversity and welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

Medefer is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone who uses the company services or work within the organisation. In this role, you’ll help us to protect vulnerable people from harm and abuse. We require all team members to follow local safeguarding policies and complete necessary training to maintain a safe, respectful and proactive environment. Background checks are mandatory for successful candidates, and a commitment to safeguarding practices is essential.

Medefer contact details are provided for the specific purpose to support potential candidates and are not to be used to market services.
