Head of Engineering at Rerun
At Rerun, we’re building the data stack for Physical AI. Large parts of the physical-world economy will be transformed by intelligent products, and we're developing the data infrastructure and tools that make it possible.
Our open-source project focuses on logging and visualizing multimodal data and is already loved by some of the best teams in the world. We’re now building our commercial platform — managed infrastructure for ingesting, storing, analyzing, and building training data pipelines for Physical AI at scale.
We’ve built an exceptionally senior, talented engineering team. Now we’re looking for a Head of Engineering to help us scale — a leader who thrives in early-stage environments, starts hands-on with direct management, and then builds and mentors managers as the team grows.
What You’ll Do
Drive technical trade-offs and engineering execution — partner with Product and Architecture leadership to turn product strategy into executable plans. Ensure projects are scoped clearly, milestones are grounded yet ambitious, and dependencies are well-managed. Effectively challenge assumptions, surface risks early, and make trade-offs explicit. Own the balance between speed, quality, and sustainability.
Build and shape the engineering org — design structures, processes, team structure, and performance systems that let a world-class team grow fast while staying aligned with our product architecture and workflows.
Manage and grow people — run effective 1:1s, give clear feedback, and implement leveling and performance systems that keep expectations high and growth continuous.
Recruit and hire — attract, evaluate, and close top-tier engineering talent. Over time, hire and develop managers to scale the org while maintaining high standards.
Maintain technical grounding — develop a clear understanding of how the product and systems work, and stay aware of their current state. Engage with code, builds, and technical reviews at a lightweight level to stay close to reality, enabling you to make well-informed strategic and organizational decisions.
Foster an energizing culture for engineering — create an environment where engineers feel motivated, connected, and supported, especially in a remote-first setting.
Partner across functions — communicate trade-offs and decisions with clarity, highlighting what is known, where confidence is high, and where uncertainty remains. Share expertise to guide decisions, while fostering open dialogue and inviting constructive challenge.
Collaborate with a highly senior technical team — work with our CTO, Chief Architect, and senior engineers shaping technical direction. Bring humility, curiosity, and confidence to learn from them, while ensuring people and processes enable their work to translate into fast, sustainable execution.
What We’re Looking For
Experience leading engineering in early-stage, high-growth startups (ideally Series A, 15–60 engineers) where systems and structures had to be built from the ground up.
Strong technical background in data infrastructure, with experience from teams building and operating critical systems (e.g. SLAs, on‑call rotations, high availability)
Ability to gather the right context to assess technical feasibility, evaluate trade-offs, make sound high-level design decisions, and constructively challenge assumptions in the face of uncertainty.
Committed to customer value and business impact in roadmap delivery — ensures engineering execution not only meets commitments but also delivers meaningful outcomes for customers and drives business results.
Track record of implementing processes that stick — planning cadences, performance systems, incident response, etc.
Experience hiring and managing managers, and comfort staying hands-on with direct reports until the org is ready to scale.
Strong people leadership skills: ability to mentor, motivate, and grow engineers at all levels with high energy; ability to have hard performance conversations with clarity and respect.
Humility and confidence to work alongside a very senior technical team, learning from others and amplifying their strengths.
Excellent communication skills, with a bias toward clarity, curiosity, and proactive expectation-setting.
How We Work
