Product Designer (Mid Level)

What’s Yonder?

“It's as if Time Out, Amex and Monzo had a baby” - Will T, Yonder Member

We’re building the financial membership of the future. One that works for how you live now, not how your parents banked in the 90s.

Yonder combines credit and debit in one membership that’s fair, flexible and actually enjoyable. No jargon. No dusty points system. Just rewards that actually feel rewarding, from bao to beer to a boarding pass.

We raised £23.4M in September 2024 to grow the team, launch even better rewards and expand beyond the UK. Now we’re looking for our third product designer to help take us there.

Why design matters at Yonder

Design isn’t just making something look good. It’s how a new member decides they can trust us with their money. It’s how we take something as dry as a credit account and make it simple, clear and fun. It’s how we turn rewards into something you actually look forward to using, rather than just a bunch of useless points you never touch.

That’s why design sits right at the centre here. You’ll be given big, ambiguous problems and trusted to figure them out with your team. The expectation is that you care about the details, but also about the bigger picture of what we’re trying to achieve.

About the role

You’ll be the third designer in the company, joining Craig (Head of Design) and Bryony (Principal Designer). You’ll be embedded in a small squad with a product manager and two engineers. Depending on your skills and interests, you’ll join either:

  • Growth & Activation – focused on sign-up, onboarding and everything that helps new members feel confident using Yonder straight away
  • Member Value – focused day-to-day spending and making Yonder feel like the account members rely on the most

What you'll be doing

  • Turning big, messy problems into simple, fun experiences. You’ll take broad challenges and shape them into flows, prototypes and eventually polished features that feel effortless and delightful to use.
  • Running your own research. Designers here don’t sit at arm’s length from members. You’ll speak with them directly, test concepts, run usability sessions and use those insights to guide what we build.
  • Working shoulder to shoulder with your squad. You’ll be in the room shaping ideas with a PM, front end and back end engineer, not waiting for handovers. You’ll figure out solutions together and make sure the end result feels like it was built as one team.
  • Balancing speed with craftsmanship. Some weeks you’ll move quickly, putting scrappy ideas in front of members just to learn. Other times you’ll slow down and obsess over the typography, spacing, colour and motion that make Yonder feel premium, fun and trustworthy.
  • Keeping our design system alive. You’ll add to it, refine it and make sure it helps us move fast without sacrificing consistency or quality.

A bit about you

We’re not looking for someone to just push pixels. You’ll thrive here if:

  • You have a few years of experience. You’ve shipped consumer-facing products before, ideally in a startup, and you know what it feels like to design something, see it in the wild, and adapt when it doesn’t land.
  • You’re a design generalist. You might have a refined specialism, but you’re comfortable covering the full design spectrum. In our squads there aren’t researchers, content designers or copywriters to rely on, so you enjoy switching hats.
  • You care deeply about craftsmanship. You believe design isn’t just about making something usable, it’s about making it feel effortless, trustworthy and a joy to use. You sweat the details not for the sake of perfection, but because you know they change how people feel.
  • You enjoy talking to users. You’d rather put ideas in front of members and learn than design in a vacuum.
  • You communicate openly and often. You share early, bring people into your process and see engineers and PMs as creative partners.
  • You care about impact, not output. You believe shipping a feature doesn’t count unless it genuinely helps members. You track the impact of what you build, not just the volume.
  • You’re a scrappy operator. You’re not precious about testing rough ideas when speed matters more than polish, but you also know when it’s time to slow down and get it right.
  • You work like its 2025. You like experimenting with new tools and approaches. We already use AI in our work, and we expect you to explore how it can make you faster and sharper.

This role isn't for you if...

We think it’s just as important to be clear about who the role isn't a good fit for, so nobody ends up frustrated.

  • You’re looking for a tidy 9–5. We work hard, and there will be times when evenings or even weekends are needed to get something over the line. It’s not every week, but you’ll need to be comfortable going above and beyond when it matters.
  • You prefer working solo. Design at Yonder is collaborative by nature. You’ll constantly be talking with members, bouncing ideas around with PM's or engineers, and shaping solutions with your squad. If you’re not energised by that, you’ll find it tough here.
  • You want to optimise for remote working. We’re an office-first company. You’ll be expected to be in our Hoxton office more often than not, because that’s where the best collaboration happens.
  • You want months to polish one project. We move quickly. Sometimes you’ll need to be scrappy and ship fast to learn. If you need every project to be perfect before it sees daylight, this won’t be the right fit.
  • You’d rather wait for instructions than take ownership. We expect designers to run with problems, make decisions and take responsibility for outcomes. If you’re looking for a role with step-by-step direction, this isn’t it.

💰 £56,000 - £74,000 annual salary

What’s the interview process like?

We take the candidate experience really seriously, so we’ve made the process as transparent as possible. We also promise to be super responsive, and will never leave you wondering where you stand for weeks on end.

Here’s how it works:

Apply
Send over some previous examples of your work and your CV.

Stage 1: Hiring manager call (30 mins):
We'll have an initial call to find out a bit more about one another, and if there's alignment on the role.

Stage 2: Portfolio Review (60 mins):
We’ll dive deep into one or two projects to understand how you approached the problem, what solution you came to, and the impact you had on your end user and the business.

Stage 3: On-Site (3-4 hours):
You’ll come into our Old Street office to meet the team. This’ll include:

  • App critique: You’ll lead Craig and another Yonderer through a conversational examination of an app you regularly use. This’ll help us better understand your mobile product design know-how.
  • Values interview: We'll discuss both of our working styles and values, sharing past experiences and learnings, to see if we’re fully aligned.
  • Lunch with the team: This is just a chance to get to know each other a bit more naturally - fully on us!

Offer:
We promise to make a decision within 48 hours.

Other things to know:

  • We love closing the feedback loop at Yonder. You can expect specific feedback on our decision from Stage 2 onwards, and you can always ask for more.
  • We must complete the right to work & criminal background checks for every new Yonder-er for compliance purposes because we handle sensitive customer data.
  • We also do reference checks, ideally with your most recent manager on the phone.
  • We like to move quickly at Yonder, so we will be ready to onboard you once the above checks are complete - the entire process can take between 2 - 6 weeks.

🌈 We know that diverse teams build better products. If you’re from an under-represented community, we’d especially love to hear from you.

👉 Even if you don’t feel 100% qualified, please do apply anyway. Your attitude and desire to grow are just as important as your experience.
